When I bring up Task Manager, it comes up as a simple box with a list of
item running, however, it's missing the top of the box that contains the
File Menu and the Tabs that let you switch to the different view. The only
way to close the task manager is to place the mouse over the icon in the
system tray and select close.

At any rate, I can't do much with the Task Manager since the Tabs don't show
up.

Double-click on the gray outside border of the window and the tabs should
return.

Cool! That worked. At first I thought it was going to be something much
more serious.
Thanks

to Gary and all:

These community news groups are a little known source of gold and diamonds.
Task Manager has been hassling me with this "no tabs" view stuck in
"processes" for months and there is nothing in the help files about fixing
it.. Looking here I found the question had already been asked and answered.

I've solved about 10 problems looking here in the past two years.

Thanks

Simply double click on the grey area around the edges of the task manager to
reinstate the tabs etc
