Post subject: RFH - Network problem with 3Com NIC
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>networking (more info?)

Problem: One client suddenly stopped being able to browse internet or
share files.

Setup: ADSL modem/router > HUB > 3 PC LAN

Known (Problem client): WinMe - 3Com 3C509b NIC - WinMe PNP supplied
driver - No problems identified in device manager - System clean per
Avast/Adaware - Network (Client for MS networks - 3C509b TPO - TCP/IP -
File/Print share) - ***Driver Type under NIC properties is greyed out
with none selected*** - Ping works okay

Unsuccessful corrective actions - Remove network/nic drivers, rename
drvdata.bin/drvidx.bin and reinstalled. Run repair on IE6

All input appreciated

Additional actions:

1. Deleted VXD registry keys: DHCP, DHCPOptions, MSTCP, Winsock2
2. Deleted Services registry key: Winsock2

Current situation: Can now browse the internet for a short period of
time (minutes) then connectivity is lost "Page cannot be displayed".
Reboot restores connection again for a short period of time.

I have had a few problems with that chipset (very much like you have ,
intermittent)...can you determine the actual drivers for the card instead of
using the supplied ones from Windows ?

physically check the card for MFR markings and install the driver from the
MFR website.

Additional actions:

1. Downloaded latest drivers from 3Com for the 3c509b Nic... No change.
2. Replaced NIC with IBM Etherjet - Used Windows and IBM drivers... No
change.
