Post subject: Network Prob Between Win98 and xp
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>networking (more info?)

Hi, I recently bought a used emachine computer and it has Winxp and an
Intel wired adapter in it. I tried to hook this up to another computer
on my home network which has a dlink 530tx network card and neither
computer can see each other. Ran the network wizard on both machines I
can see that both are hooked up via the hub lights and still nothing.
This setup uses a cat5 setup I have used for years between a win98 and a
win95 computer the workgroup names are the same. I dunno what the
problem could be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chris

Check to see if your sharing something and that file and printer sharing is
installed.

Check the IP address to see if both are on the same network

Thanks for your reply Jon. I checked the sharing and full sharing is
permitted on both computers. How would I check to see if both ip
addresses are on the same network? What do you mean when you say"check
to see if you're sharing something? As you might of guessed I am not to
experienced with either xp nor networks in general. Thanks again

First of all, "File Sharing" is a misnomer -- you share folders, not
individual files. When you enable File and Printer sharing, you just make it
possible. You still have to manually, individually share a printer or a
folder (in their Properties) for them to actually be shared. Jon means to
make sure that at least one folder or printer is shared on each machine.

To check the IP addresses, use WINIPCFG in Win9x and IPCONFIG from a Command
Prompt in WinXP (Start>Run, type in CMD then <Enter>). The machines should
have the same IP except the last set of digits. Make sure that the subnet
mask is the same, also.

If still having problems, post back the data from the WINIPCFG and IPCONFIG
results.

Thanks for your help. I got the durn thing working by fiddling with it
until I broke it and then when I reinstalled everything in the win98
computer the setup program made everything work. If I hadn't started
from scratch then I would of gone bald. Thanks again you put me on the
right track. Think about the PNAC when you have time.

Always good to keep a eye on the true enemies of the people. Thanks for the
suggestion.
