[this is the FIFTH attempt to post this msg here !!!]

The website at Pest Patrol did a scan on my Win98SE and found
"multidial" threat

I can't find much about it

After downloading ad-aware and spybot, both of them never found it.

So what is it? Is it bad?

How do I get rid of it?

Eric,

Thank you for your prompt reply with a complete description.

Indeed have never gotten such a request while online.

However,...Have gotten "Dial up" Windows at inappropriate times when
not online, as the computer was trying to connect to the internet.
I've always declined the request, but don't know what is initiating the
requrest. And the dial up request is the normal number of our ISP.

No, but you can munge it yourself.

Good point. "how" could have meant a request for information on how to
get on the newsgroup? In this case it means:
How does one muge their own email address?

If you don't include previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup,
we have no idea what you're talking about.

Its almost self-explanatory using a newsreader and setting it up in the
process. Which newsreader do you intend to use?

dak,

Thank you for the link.

Jonny,

What is a "newsreader"?

I don't think I'm using one at google.
My ISP provides Stalker for me for personal emails.

I removed Something Explorer by MS. Internet Explorer is bad enough
but do use it..

Not so sure I'd remove something that I didn't know what it was or what it
did.

I used to use Something Explorer, guess it was a newsreader. I thought
it was an email editor.

But when changed from 4.0 to 5.0 and I tried to export import, instead
of changing all my history into something useable, the program
DUPLICATED and I ran out of memory. What a memory hog storing all my
email correspondence in TWO FORMS!!!. Had to do small chunks of what I
knew I needed. Irritating.

Now I keep everything in text files. That can't go out of date. Any
editor opens them. And the files aren't that big.

But I knew that Something Explorer was a useless waste and had all
kinds of security problems, so I removed it after it kept trying to
open on its own.

Tim,

I kinda assumed that, but with science, it's not safe to assume.

I had so much trouble when I upgraded to OE5 that I just threw it out.
Wouldn't go back either. Couldn't even get onto the newsgroups to get
answers.

Well, at least without OE running and when I'm sitting here typing in
stuff, I'm not exposed to any "back port" attacks. Am I?

Plus, I've never had my text editor accidentally open an aggressive
email. just doesn't work on it.

PA Bear,

Thank you for the detailed instructions. I'll save them in archive in
case someday I do reinstall Outlook Express.

It's not on my machine. I got tired of it trying to start up on its
own, don't use it, prefer storing emails as text files anyway [that
way, the storage size is less and very easy to jump through and my
archives are always compatible with *any* text editor]

But, I do appreciate the instructions just in case.
