Hello!

I use Win2k adv. server with active directory and the latest updates
(windowsupdate.microsoft.com)...i have a problem with my harddisk:

Since ~two months i have this event:
Source: Application Popup
Type: Information
Event ID: 26
Description:
Application popup: SyncBack.exe - Corrupt File : The file or directory
E:\$Secure is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

-> Not only once time, again and again...

Today in the Morning i had this Event:
Source: Application Popup
Type: Information
Event ID: 26
Description:
Application popup: Windows - Corrupt File : The file or directory E: is
corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

and:

-> I did a Ghost Image this morning...

and this one:
Source: Application Popup
Type: Information
Event ID: 26
Description:
Application popup: Windows - Corrupt File : The file or directory
E:\$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

Then i looked into the Computer Managment>Disk Managment and since this
moment, i can't access the disk...

Now i have additional these events:
Source: FTDisk
Type: Warning
Event ID: 50
Description:
{Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer file
data from buffers to \Device\HarddiskVolume3. The write operation
failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file.

Type: Information
Source: Application Popup
Type: Information
Event ID: 26
Description:
Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable
to save all the data for the file \Device\HarddiskVolume3\$Mft. The data
has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer
hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

After Restart, this one:
Source: Disk
Type: Warning
Event ID: 34
Description:
The driver disabled the write cache on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.

I can't run checkdisk over this harddisk, it says: cannot open volume
for direct access...

I had a similar problem (harddisk error) in the same PC three months
ago...i replaced the hd...and now this problem...

Could it be, that the HD-Cable is corrupt or the mainboard, IDE-Slot
problem or something like this? Or that the Harddisk gets too hot (i use
it as a server, non-stop running)?

Thanks for help...

Greetz,
Peter

If you get an error something to the effect "cannot open volume for direct
access" There is some system/boot start device that is reading/writing to
the drive before chkdsk can get a lock on the drive. Some anti-virus
applications do this.

After backup you can also run;
chkdsk /r
from the recovery console command line. (/r implies /f and /p)

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %windir% or %systemroot%

Be sure to have full backups in place before hand.

I'd also download and run a disk diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site.
