Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>performance (more info?)

I had put a cd into my cd player and now I can't get it to open and take
the cd out. I rebooted and checked my computer and even the cd icon
driver is not shown. Sometimes in the past I was able to e ject the cd
via the driver icon. It is possible that in my haste to put the cd in I
may of put it in wrong, which is rare, but possible, and that maybe the
reason why I can't open it. Does anyone have a clue to get opened or at
the least listed again in windows explorer?

If the device is not being seen on the boot screen or in Explorer, then the
drive is probably DOA. Look on the front of the drive for a small hole and
push a straightened paper clip in it to open the CD drawer.

Any lights on the CD drive - even just a flash when you turn the PC on or
off? _Could_ be just the power plug has come out (of the back of the drive),
though unlikely: they tend to hang on like grim death (even when you _want_
to disconnect them, in fact especially then!). Or, the data cable - either
at the CD drive end or the motherboard end.

Ron beat me to it with the paperclip; that's certainly what the little hole
is for. (I can't remember if they advise you not to do this with the power
on though.)

If the drive _has_ died, worry not; they're dirt cheap nowadays, if you can
even find a player-only; even writers are prety cheap, even DVD ones.
(Though watch out, especially under '98, for compatibility: some of the
softwares, in particular the Adaptec/Roxio one [Easy CD Creator], only work
with drives they know about, and they stopped adding to the list that goes
with the version of their software that runs under '98 some time ago; I'm
not sure if Nero is similar. AFAI am aware, there's no intrinsic lack of
support in '98 itself, and BurnForFree is I think not drive-specfic. These
are all to do with burners/burning though; I _think_ any drive will work as
a _reader_ [and without needing any drivers].)

Its possible some form of software has locked down the CD reader. To verify
if this is true, reboot the PC. During the bios accounting of onboard ide
devices, press the button on the CD reader to open the tray. If it fails to
open, its a hardware problem.
Opening by using the forced open routine with paper clip in windows proves
absolutely nothing.

What about right clicking the drive letter for the cd, and selecting eject
in windows explorer?
Does the eject button work on the cd drive?
