| Help,
I have windows xp. It will not log in properly. It just keeps recycling to
log in from windows but never does until I press F8 and log in "at the last
known configuration that worked"
What's happening and what can I do to fix this?

Sounds like your computer may be encountering an error and then
immediately restarting. If so, you need to find out what error is
occurring and here's how:
Log in with "the last known configuration that worked" and go to Start >
Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Start and Recovery - Settings
button > remove the check mark from 'Automatically restart' > OK > OK
and then restart your computer.
When your computer encounters the error it will crash and you will be
glad it crashed because a blue-colored screen will appear and describe
the error. Write down the error number, which looks like this: STOP
0x000..., and the name of the error which LOOKS_LIKE_THIS and post back
with the information.

computer did not crash... I still have to log in at " the last known
configuration" ... any other ideas.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.
Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.
An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.
Use the F8 key option.
Once you have disabled automatic restart try booting in normal mode.
Restarting in Last known Good will not reproduce the error we need to
know more about.
What is the make and model of your computer? Do you have a Windows XP
CD? Is it pre or post SP2?

Hi Gerry. the auto restart is disabled, but no code is showing up on
restart. I have windows XP but I don't know what you mean by pre or post SP2.

In August 2004 Microsoft issued the SP2 Update. Disks provided with
computers before that time did not have the SP2 update included in the
CD. Disks provided with computers sold after August 2004 would have the
SP2 update included unless they were in stock in August 2004 and sold a
little later. Is there a version mentioned on the face of the CD?

I would try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes
and hit Enter.

I've got the disk in and typed in what you said but a little black window
flashes and disappears and then nothing?

Problems logging in on a Windows XP workstation - Intermittently upon login, the users desktop does not appear.
