This is another one of my adventures. I downloaded an AVG anti virus program
that disliked my System 32 files IMMENSELY and got rid of them. I copied
most of a Syatem 32 file and got MOST of my tools back--but I can't run the
scandisk off the My Computer properties. Does anybody know which specific
file or files I still need to make it work? I can't see which one I'm
missing.
PLEASE help.

Thanks.

Scandisk is a Windows 98 tool not available for use with Windows XP. Are
you referring to chkdsk?

What error message do you get?

"I downloaded an AVG anti virus program that disliked my System 32
files". AVG does not dislike files! It may find infected files and
quarantine them. You then have a virus damaged system!

" I copied most of a Syatem 32 file and got MOST of my tools back". This
sounds suspiciously like the wrong way to repair virus damage!

What is your computer make and model?

Is the Windows SP3 update installed?

What do you have by way of a Windows XP CD. Please provide the full
description appearing on the face of the CD.

I think I mean the chkdsk that you use from the My Computer Properties tools
menu. The chkdsk from the accessories/system tools menu does work but I
can't get it to fix or repair.

When I tell either one of these to repair I get the standard "do you want to
do this when you restart?"--I say yes, restart the computer and nothing
happens.

Any ideas? As usual it's just annoying.

When the System32 files were originally attacked I got a "cannot find
rundll" message but I replaced that.

Now I get ignored.

I don't want to have to reformat to fix one stupid problem.

Thanks for your help.

Is the SP3 update installed?

What do you have by way of a Windows XP CD? Does include SP2 and or SP3?

Does this work fo you?

I've got the same problem. But I also don't have the offending driver
file. I found a really sleazy workaround, though. Run msconfig. Go to
the BOOT.INI page and select the option of /SAFEBOOT. Let msconfig
reboot for you. Voila! Chkdsk runs (and so does the boot
defragmenter). After you end up in safe mode, go ahead and let msconfig
set you back up for normal startup. I'm not thrilled by this solution
(the dirty bit is very handy if something bad happens -- and that
automatic chkdsk is a pretty good thing to have in that situation), but
it works...

I have a 2002 XP CD--and I install SP2 and SP3--I copied them to a CD--on top
of it.
I have these because I don't have internet at home and I clean up others'
machines when they ask me to.
Would a site like disc agent have what I'm looking for?

I'm sorry--I didn't catch all of your first message.
I have a Compaq Presario 14--something--I'm not at home--that originally had
ME on it and was upgraded to the 2002 version of XP Pro.

My copy of the CD is a copy of a copy. I have used it plenty of times--I
got it from school.

Please understand that I was trying to do a quick fix and undoubtedly hit
the wrong key.
