Hi,
My IE shuts down when I use "save target as". When I try to save a picture,
only that window closes. Please help. I can't get any response from the IE
newsgroup.
Using XP SP2 and IE6.0 coz my online banking doesn't support 7.0
Thanks

It may be an add-on or it may be that some third-party program has put
an entry into the right-click context menu that is causing the issue.
From IE>Tools>Manage Add-ons set it so only MS add-ons are used and
test. If that doesn't help, this free program from Nirsoft is the
easiest way to handle right-click issues:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html - ShellExView

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers -

Upgrading is seldom a good idea when one has problems. Fix the problem
first.

Then I really don't know because I can't see your computer. What changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

Malke,
Thanks anyway.
I like your "Don't Panic!" Great advice. I'm not panicking yet but I dread

If you can remember when everything worked for you, you can do a system
restore. That may help. Hope it does.

This is a fairly long thread so forgive me if you've already answered
this, but can you Save As when you use Firefox? If you haven't installed
Firefox yet, please give this a try. You can get it from another machine
and save onto a usb thumbdrive or even burn a cd-r since you have issues
with IE. The url is http://www.mozilla.com.
This will help determine if the problem is with IE alone or something else.

God, this context stuff is complicated. Anyway, I disabled each
non-microsoft add-ons, one at a time and tested. Nothing worked. Not even
when I disable all non-microsoft add-ons.
Would microsoft add-ons be the culprit?
Anyway, I downloaded and installed netscape 8.13 Same story, it shuts down
on "save target as" too.
I can't do IE7 now. Not until my internet banking can support it. I can do
without IE7, can't do without web bank.

Frank,
I agree not to upgrade because of problems.
Responses seem to think right click issue/context menu handlers are the
cause. I thought so too.
When i was downloading Nirsoft's ShellExView, I had 2 options, "save to
disk" or "Run". Opting for save would also shut down the IE, and my only
choice is "run". I guess right-click is not an issue because no right click
was involved.
So saving is the problem. "Save picture", "save target as", "save to disk",
they all shut down IE. Is "save" classified as a context menu handler?
I don't think I will attempt to modify the registry because I'm not an
expert nor do I understand the values stated in them. Most of all, it may
just crash the entire system if I did something wrong, regardless of backing
up registry.
Strange thing is: this problem occured to someone else back in 2004 but
there was no logged resolution. At least, I couldn't locate one.
I really appreciate all your responses. They were very helpful. Even though
they did not resolve the problem, I did learn a few things. Still learning.
Any other suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks.
Sonny.

In IE go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
Close IE and reopen it and see if that helped.

Malke,
I haven't done firefox. But I did Netscape with the same results. Anyway,
I'll try firefox.
I can't save to disk but I can still run it.
Thanks for the advice

Firefox doesn't have a "save target as" but a "save link as". I supposed
it's the same.
Results: The filepicker was unexpectedly closed by window.
It doesn't shut down but it completely does not respond even though the
window seems to be downloading in the background. Only option is to close
with the task manager.

Have you performed antivirus and antispywares scan? did you found anything?
The related registry entries are found at
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt]
Each subkey of this key represents one menu item. Many will include an
ampersand (&) to define the underlined key associated with the command.
Unusual subkeys may appear here that can cause the problem and can be deleted
but be sure you know what you are doing.
You can also remove the unwanted context-menu entries using Toolbarcop. This
is an easier method.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/toolbarcop.htm
ToolbarCop is a browser extensions manager which can disable or eliminate
the following browser add-ons selectively from Internet Explorer:
Browser Helper Objects (BHO)
-Toolbars
-Standard Toolbar buttons
-Context menu Extensions*
-Download managers
-Protocol Handlers
-Horizontal / Vertical Explorer Bars (side-search bars)
-Startup applications originating from RUN registry keys.
