You should have researched driver availability first. There are no XP
drivers for this computer:

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=1015005R

It is possible that you could put in a PCI network adapter and have it
work if all of your other hardware is OK. However, if you are having
other difficulties (USB issues, power issues, etc.) then the smartest
thing to do is restore your computer to factory condition and either
live with Vista or return the machine to the store and buy one running
the operating system you want (XP).

Have you checked Device Manager to see what devices don't have
drivers?
Get the drivers directly from the manufacturers of the interfaces.

Research first - save yourself the trouble.

Having skipped that part - contact Gateway. They can tell you whether or
not they support that system with Windows XP on it.

Next time - a nice web link will save you time describing your computer
specs:
http://www.gateway.com/product_spec.php?product_recid=529667887

Here is the support provided by Gateway for your computer:
http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1015005R/1015005Rnv.shtml

Here's the downloads they provide:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=1015005R

They only mention Windows Vista on all of their pages.

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Unfortunately - a Google Search turns up nothing on getting this
particular model downgraded to Windows XP...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Gateway+FX7020+%22Windows+XP%22+drivers

Was there more than a 'didn't like the interface' or 'couldn't
understand where to go or how to do _____' reason to downgrade the
decently powered quad-core system with 3GB of memory?

Contact Gateway and/or figure out the actual manufacturer's of each
component in the system and download the drivers directly from each one of
their support web pages.

Did Gateway have any winxp chipset drivers & Lan on their site for this
mobo?
If not & unless you can identify the specific mobo, & it may be a gateway
specific one, you run the risk of having an unstable PC
If you can disable the onboard Lan in the bios you would be able to fit a
card

I am not sure is a quad-core is enough to run Vista.

I just bought the gateway 5658E system as well. Based upon your hardware specs i found the nic driver for WinXp, as I need a dual boot system with the Vista and WinXP.

How to create dual boot:
There is a trick to this, but since the system comes with two 500MB drives, I installed winXp on the 2nd drive, once installed, reboot with the vista dvd (that came with the pc) and do a repair. then when vista does the repair, it now knows there are 2 o/s's on the system. You are not done yet...using the following to fix the Vista boot loader from the cmd prompt
bcdedit /set {ntldr} device boot

now you can boot into either winXp or Vista. sweet deal!

Your original request:
NIC driver for WinXP:

It can be found on the http://www.nvidia.com website under

nForce 430/410/405/400 - Windows XP/2000 32-Bit

I downloaded it and installed, it worked great.
