My laptop hard drive has crashed so I am replacing it. I can't find my
original discs. Does/will Microsoft replace with the laptop sn or am I going
to buy a new set of discs?

Their is high probability that you have an OEM version of XP. If so, then
you should get the replacement disks from the laptop manufacturer.
What you would get from MS, is the standard version of XP with generic
drivers. You will also need the chipset drivers, the graphics driver, and
the wireless adapter drivers.
You are going to seriously regret your carelessness in losing the discs.

Microsoft can't help you with an OEM version of Windows.

Was it Home or Pro? Did your laptop come with XP? Do you still have the
Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker on the bottom of the laptop?
If so, are you able to read all the characters of the Product Key? Don't
post it!!!

Are you sure your laptop came with disks? Often, PC manufacturers
(unfortunately) don't include them. What is the make and model of your
laptop?

You can either visit http://www.restoredisks.com/ to see if they have a
recovery/restore disk (if that is what the PC manufacturer originally
included) or purchase a generic OEM copy of Windows XP (Better yet,
borrow one if you are able to. You already have the license to run
Windows, it would be a shame to spend any more money.) If you have a
qualifying disk like 98 or ME, you can purchase and install a Windows XP
upgrade disk. If I were you, I'd stay away from the Full, Retail version
of XP, which is the most expensive way to reinstall Windows.

Finally, perhaps the PC manufacturer can send you a disk for a nominal
fee. And this is what you should look into first.
