Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

The problem is related to Sata Drives and I have a totally new copy of
Windows XP
with the latest updates. I recently updated BIOS and other components as
well.

My problem in this case is that I can't restart or shut down XP before I
Safely remove the device
as one should do when a USB-device is plugged in.

It's a SATA DVD-ram: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA.

It's an Acer Laptop. I'm using it for school so I rather not hear;
you should return it to Acer because we all know what then happens;
12 weeks later >>we seem to have a little problem with your laptop<< and so
on.

Before reading the next lines you should know that I ofcourse use original
versions of
Microsoft Windows.

I've tried this so far:

Installed XP in Danish

Reinstalled XP in English

Reinstalled XP with SATA drivers (Danish once again)

Opened the laptop and unplugged the DVD-ram.

---------------------------------------------- everything but the vital for
XP to work.

Tried this tricky thing out in Registry Database:

search the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
search for "4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318"

Search the propertys UpperFilter an LowersFilter and kill the value. If only
one prop. is there,
you must kill only the one value.

I have no clue what so ever.

You write 'My problem in this case is that I can't restart or shut down XP
before I Safely remove the device'

You seem to have got things wrong here. You have to disconnect your external
before shutting down. If you manage to do it the other way round you will start
up a computer which thinks it has a USB external connected and it is looking for
the many folders you might have on that external. So be a good danish lad and
make sure you hit the icon on the right side of the taskbar and you get the OK
to disconnect BEFORE YOU SHUT DOWN XP. Glem ikke at g|re det hver gang i
fremtiden. Smile

When I have a little idle time I shall look at my Acer Laptop and see if I can
get it to display POST while it is booting - that is the only way I can see you
knowing that it is a SATA. Remember that SATA drives of whatever kind has to
have special inputs when first installing - I am now wondering - you have been
working on the computer - was it like that when new or is that just after you
have updated your bios.

Oh my god "Bart Simpson". That's it. I've searched for the clue for 2 months
now Smile I am one happy man but....

The driver for the "Sata in XP installation" wants to be extracted to a
floppy drive but I don't have a floppy drive in my laptop. Do somebody know
if I could use an USB stick instead?

I've not used the USB stick for drivers so can't comment. My guess is yes.

Goto http://www.nliteos.com/ and use it to slipstream the install CD on an ISO
It will add SP's
Special Drivers
Setup info like Serial number for copr installs

Instructions are not really clear but can be understood after a few mistakes
(that I made Smile
