My daily (on line) newspaper (Pensacola News Journal)
invites readers to make comments on articles it has
published. When the comment appears a moment later, a
ThumbsUp/Down icon is displayed, and the reader can vote Up
or Down. A running score is shown which allows one to judge
the feeling of the community.
Evidently I am the only person in the county that can't vote
because the icon does not display on my XP MCE desktop nor
on my XP HE laptop. Evidently I am missing a plugin or some
such thing. I talked to people at the paper and they assure
me that XP is okay. Also, since the running score keeps
changing, I know that others are voting. My wife, who has a
W7 laptop (right out of the box) has the icon displayed, and
she can vote.
I use IE8. I tried Firefox, but couldn't even get logged in
with that. Chrome lets me log in, but doesn't show the
ThumbsUp/Down, same as IE8.
The comments page has a block at the bottom that says
" Powered by Pluck ". I suspect that might have something
to do with the situation, but that's a wag.
I have installed all the published updates. Help
appreciated.

Disable your security software (anti-virus, 3rd party firewall, etc).
If you're using the hosts file to block content, like ads, move or
rename it. Flush the web browser TIF cache. Then retest.

When you go to the voting page, what do you see at the very
top edge of the IE active window? When a plugin is called
but missing, default configuration shows a one-line notice at
the top of the active window, with the option to instal the plugin.

Thanks for answering. There is no instruction up there.
The 'running score', which must be a part of the mystery app
that perform the tally and display of Thumbs UPs and Downs,
displays perfectly. Just the part that reads the UP or Down
click and dutifully adds or subtracts one from the running
score seems to be missing from my two XP computers.

Thanks for answering. I turned off my Panda Cloud AV, shut
down ZA firewall (and opened up Windows firewall), cleaned
up drive C:/, which included flushing the web TIF and
disabled HOSTS, but the problem persists.
I read a lot from the Drudge Report, and most of the papers
he copies offer provisions for the reader to make comments.
Each of these reader's comments has (usually) a tiny little
ThumbsUp/Down icon for voting. All seem to work perfectly
on both my machines. It's only my local paper that seems
not to work for me, altho I must admit it seems to work for
everybody else, including my wife.
I appreciate your help.

In future, you can share a picture of your screen, or of the
browser Window, with one of the many image hosting sites.
I happen to use www.imageshack.us . One problem with this
particular site, is it cannot be viewed world-wide. The content
is excluded from some countries, based on the viewer's IP address.
(select "Do Not Resize" from the upload menu, to avoid making the
image too fuzzy to read)
For example, this is what I saw, when visiting the site you mention.
I think this is captured in IE6 (done in a virtual machine I
happened to have running at the time). I don't always view
suspicious pages in the my primary browsers. If it was
really suspicious, I would have run it in a Linux virtual machine
instead. I only used the Windows VM, because I was already working
in it.

When viewing the page source, I can see Javascript code. But
I don't know nearly enough about web technology, to tell you how
the floater bar at the bottom of the web page is done (or even,
how to stop those). Maybe your thumbs-up/thumbs-down widget is similar
to the floater thing on the bottom.
In theory, it would be possible to go through the packet
trace from visiting that site, and look at *all* the info
they pulled in, then figure out from that how any features work.
But the thing is, web servers can serve dynamic content, based
on the web browser identity string, and if I use a different
browser than you, there is no guarantee I get the same files.
Also, the information transmitted can be encrypted - perhaps
not in this case, but that is also a mechanism I can't deal
with. Using packet tracing works with sites, other than my bank

While you could review all the settings in the Internet security zone
(Internet Options -> Security tab -> Internet zone) to see if, for
example, scripting had been disabled, it might be easier to reset it to
its default protection level and retest. Under the Internet security
zone,
Also check the Restricted Sites security zone to see if any sites are
listed under there (to neuter them).
Under the Privacy tab, check if any sites are listed for which their
cookies will get blocked at at what level you are filtering cookies (if
other than the Default level). >> Stay informed about: Which plugin (or maybe something enabled) do I need? |

You say you've already been in contact with the paper in question;
depending on how keen you are to help get this sorted (for the benefit
of others as well as yourself) and how local the paper actually is to
you, you could offer to take your laptop in with you and _show_ them ...
I say "offer to" rather than just go in unannounced, as, if it's a small
paper, they may need the website designer to come in, who may not be a
permanent member of staff.
