My user profile on my old Windows XP hard drive was password protected. I've
installed my old hard drive into an external hard drive case & then connected
it to my new laptop that's running Vista. How do I copy my documents from my
old XP hard drive to my new system? If I try it says that I don't have
permission. I've taken "ownership" of the folders (which lets me see their
contents), but it still doesn't let me open the files. Is there anyway to
get it to ask me for the user name & password I had assigned on the xp hard
drive or any other suggestions?

Thanks Peter, but my old computer bit the dust.

In Explorer, right click the drive in question and select Properties

On the Security tab click Advanced
On the Owner tab
Select you account if it isn't already and
Check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
Click OK twice (close all dialogs)

That sets you as owner of every folder and file on the drive

In Explorer, right click the drive in question and select Properties

On the Security tab add your account if it is not already there and set Full Access
Click Apply
Click Advanced
Check "Replace permission on all child objects with......"
Click Apply

Hi. I'm having a very similar problem as the original poster in this
thread. My hard drive crashed, won't even boot up Windows XP at all.
So I got a new hard drive, installed Windows XP on it, put my old drive
in an external case and connected it via USB. I can view the files on
it and transferred some to the new drive, but others it says I do not
have access to. That hard drive is password protected through Windows
XP. The old one is SATA and the new one is SATAII, in case that
matters. I attempted to follow the instructions in this thread but
when I right click the old hard drive in Explorer and select
Properties, there is no Security tab. The tabs are General, AutoPlay,
Tools, Hardware, Sharing and Quota. I am the only person who uses this
computer and am set up as Administrator. Any ideas of how I can access
the rest of my files?

I figured it out. I had to first turn off Simple File Sharing as
instructed 'here' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881) and then the
Security tab was there and I was able to take ownership of the password
protected files and have all my stuff again. Yay.
