Can someone please tell me how to change what program opens when a MM
(multimedia) link is clicked in Internet Explorer?

For example:
MP3 linked >> IE opens to another window (same session, not a separate
new session) and displays Windows Media Player slider controls ... but
I'd rather WinAMP player open!

MP4 link clicked >> IE opens to another window and nothing (apparently
IE has no association for MP4) but MP4's do play on the PC

WMV link clicked and WMP player is launched (hurray)!

I'd like to know how to make IE launch the stand-alone player of my
choice for MP3, MP4, RM (Real Player media), WMV etc.

Anybody?

Thanks
Vic

PS: if registry adjustments are required, no problem, do that quite a
bit and have redundant backups

First you may try to go to Start>Set Program Access and Defaults>Custom> and
change to use my default media player....

I went to Start (button) but there is no 'Set Program Access and
Defaults'. This PC is setup to look like Win98. Could it have
disappeared?

TIA

Then check on control panel>add remove programs. There is a button in the left
with same function.
To restore "xp view" you may try control>panel>system<advanced>performance
settings>visual effects
