too many security updates - The computer runs very slow. Went to to see what I could take out. Found more than 20 security updates and other similar programs. A. - is this slowing the computer? B. - should I do something to remove them?

I can't install the KB922770 security update for .NET 2.0. Error code in the event log is 0x80070643. KB923100 says to uninstall and reinstall .NET 2.0, but I can't do an uninstall or repair -- "patch package could not be opened." I also can't install .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1. I get a message that SLB0.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close. What should I do?
