Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance area, Settings button Visual
Effects tab "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

Emimec
I think I have what you want.
Try Start, Control, Panel, Display, Settings, Appearance. Al six items
should be checked except Use large icons (unless you prefer them). Items
1 and 2 have scroll options and I have Fade Effect for Item 1 and
Standard for Item 2.

Hope this helps.

Tried both suggestions offered, still got the blue box under the words of
each desktop icon. I can change the colour of the box, but still cant get
rid of it.
Any other suggestions welcome please
