Hello,
Running Windows XP Home and just upgraded my motherboard and cpu. Now when
starting PC it begins the boot process, then I get a flash of a blue screen
and then the PC restarts itself. If I attempt to start in safe mode, it once
again restarts, but without the flash of the blue screen. Anyone have ideas?
Thanks.

Hi kah, I just ran into the same prob 2 days ago. What's going on is your
operating system is trying to load the MBR (settings, chipset drivers,
etc...) for your old motherboard and cpu. I just ran setup and reinstalled
from the XP cd. Gotta change the first boot device to cdrom in the BIOS on
the advanced setup page. After you reboot and setup is running make sure you
select the "upgrade" option so you wont loose your programs and data you have
on your HDD. Enjoy your new mobo and cpu!!!

After the re-install, you will have to re-install all Service Packs,
Upgrades and Patches for Windows XP.

Correct for the most part, but the MBR (Master Boot Record) has nothing to
do with it.
The only driver that is causing the problem is the hard drive controller
driver. If properly prepared, an XP install will boot on a new motherboard
without needing a repair install, but most people don't/can't properly
prepare.

It's not just the driver for the hard drive controller. Many drivers for
the system board could be involved.

This may not get him into Windows but will at the very least give him a
stop error on screen to work with.
The rest of your advice is grand IF he makes it into Windows.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing
the F8 key during StartUp and select option - Disable automatic
restart on system failure.
Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.
Do you have a Windows XP CD or a Restore CD?
What is the make and model of your computer?
There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

That is the only driver that will cause the "Inaccessible boot device" BSOD
after a motherboard change, which is the one most posts here are about, XP
does a very good job of dealing with the new hardware change if you take
care of this problem before the motherboard swap.

No problem. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Windows is not Linux. Windows must be reinstalled after changing
motherboards. >> Stay informed about: computer recycles at startup |

That's assuming fairly similar chipsets on the old and new motherboard,
which you may or may not have the luxury of having. Only in very few,
pretty much luck of the draw instances, can you avoid reinstalling Windows
when changing motherboards. >> Stay informed about: computer recycles at startup |

I do it on a regular basis, and have had very good success even when going
so far as changing the processor from an AMD to an Intel and vice-versa
