Simple question. does the xp pro backup software work on external HD?

I have read in several reviews that it does, but I cannot back up to a WD
mybook 160gb cavair external. Where is the problem here?

Should work. Is the drive formatted as FAT, limiting the file size to
4GB? Or does it not backup at all? (convert to NTFS if so)

The external HD has to be accessible as a drive letter; then NTBackup
will backup to a file it creates on the HD.

The problem is that the authors of ntbackup only provide the ability to copy
the backup file to either a floppy drive or a file on a hard drive
somewhere. If you want to put the backup file on (many) CDs or (several)
DVDs, then you must use either Nero or EasyCD Creator because the two
programs can copy a file to several disks.

Conversetly, when you restore, you should copy the backup file from the CDs
or DVDs before trying to restore the backup.

I have a Western Digital 160GB formatted NTFS and I use it all the
time with the NT backup utility. Very strange...

I have now reformated to NTFS (it was FAT32 ) Now it is exactly the same. I
can access the drive, move data, delete data etc , but can not backup. A box
comes up telling to start removable serices under the management console for
tape unites and external devices.

I can also tell you that Ghost 2003 will go absolutely nuts when an external
HDD is used, so the external HDD cannot be used to store images using Ghost.
