Windows update

I can no longer access Windows Update - also I have Windows Defender
installed and am unable to update that. I keep getting the following message:

Error number: 0x8024402C

Only started getting this when I installed IE 7 (which I have now removed as
I access internet through BTYahoo!) - but even after removing IE 7 I still
cannot access updates.

Can anybody help me?
