Excuse me, I got COA tag with my new computer and shop assistant told me,
that I can use it with every CD of Windows XP Proffesional. So I installed
Windows XP Prof. and downloaded program (from http://microsoft.cz ) to reset
Product Key. I ran it, inserted Product Key, but it showed error. I restarted
PC and System told me to activate. So I ran activating program, and inserted
Product Key. Only response was, that activation program said me, it couldnt
activate widnows, and that, I have to call support. I rather ask here. Do you
know, what is wrong?

Thank for help.

What does it say on the COA? (*Don't* give us the product key!) You need
to determine also if the license is OEM or Retail.

> So I installed Windows XP Prof.

From what kind of media did you install it?

The story is, the key goes with the type of software.
XP Pro, Home, or MCE. Then there is a Retail and OEM version of each.
Not counting Volume License (VL) versions.
Your sticker should tell you what its for.
If you got things right, its not wrong to have to call MS to get it
activated on occasions. I've reloaded my PC 10 times in one week and
finally had to call MS. Okay, I like to play. It could be that simple.
Remember "could be".
IMHO a COA sticker is a COA Sticker. Unlike someone writing it on a
paper sleeve and saying its right.

I might ask, if you got a CD, and you bought it, it too comes with a Key
, why not use it? But if you mean borrowed it, then I understand.

I bought COA license tag with it cost, but it was only-to-buy-with-PC. It's
Windows XP proffesional COA tag, as my Windows are. CD is not sellable.
And It's not only paper .. there are in-light-color labels as Genuine. Bar
code is there as well.

So okay.. I will ask in shop or call MS
Thank you.

Your sticker is a Windows XP Professional OEM sticker. You will need an
OEM copy of Windows XP Pro. Also if he sold you that license without a
computer (or any hardware for that matter) then he broke OEM rules doing
that. The OEM stickers should always be supplied with a CD.

This is a branded (HP), not generic, OEM license.

Please be more specific. What kind of CD? Home or Pro? (I believe you
had earlier said Pro, but I want to be sure.) Generic OEM, branded OEM
(and if so, what make? HP? Dell? etc.), or Retail?

Normally they go together. A PC + COA Tag + OEM CD's to reload.
Along with Drivers for the hardware.

If its a OEM Tag as Robert says, then only the OEM Software is legit.
Go by XP and get a CD Key to go with it. And you'll need drivers for
hardware unsupported by XP. This is another issue without any CD's.

There's the problem. You were mis-informed, and basically ripped off.

Yes. You can't activate the type of XP Pro that you installed with the type
of key that you have. The types have to match, retail to retail, OEM to
OEM, VL to VL.

You should have received an install disk.

He/She lied.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of CD/license
(OEM, Volume, retail, or full) with which they are purchased. For
example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any retail version
of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice versa. An OEM
Product Key will not work to install a retail product. An Italian
Product Key will not work with an English CD. Bottom line: Product Keys
and CD/license types cannot usually (it's been reported that the Product
Key for a full license will work with an Upgrade CD) be mixed & matched.

You need to be using an OEM installation CD to use the OEM license
Product Key affixed to the case of the computer.
