Hi everyone.

This message (2006-12-04) is crossposted on
microsoft.public.windowsxp.customize and
microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain.


I have 2 hard disks. One for the OS. Another one for data.
I'll replace the later with a larger one.

The OS have installed 2 files on it.

F:\6a1c7...\msxml6-KB927977-enu-x86.log and
F:\b89d3...\msxml4-KB927978-enu.log

Administrator cannot manipulate them. Acces denied.

They appear to be related to MSXML 4.0 and MSXML 6.0 as I understood.
The following keys point to these disk locations.

MS06-071: Security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0:

which states:

Security update package 927978 may create a log file. The package names the
log file KB927978.log. The package saves the log file inside a folder. The
folder has a system generated name. The folder is in the root of a system
drive. The path resembles the following:
C:\system generated name\KB927978.log.
Note In this example, C is system drive.

Although it is optional, you can remove the log file and the folder.

Usually this happens when MS installs a package and searches for the
partition that has the most free space available.

If possible, I would move the folder(s) to another partition (since you said
that you are going to replace the data partition), then modify the registry
keys (if they are necessary ... some may point to Uninstall information for
the package).

Since the folders are Access Denied for Administrator, check the Security
Permissions on the folder (right-click, Properties, Security - if Windows XP
Pro). Then see if Administrators is a User given permissions. If not, Add
and make Permissions Allowed - check everything).

No, it is not. It's *multiposted* to both those newsgroups.

Please do not send the same message separately to more than one newsgroup
(called multiposting). Doing so just fragments the thread, so someone who
answers in one newsgroup doesn't get to see answers from others in another
newsgroup. And for those who read all the newsgroups the message is
multiposted to, they see the message multiple times instead of once (they
would see it only once if you correctly crossposted instead). This wastes
everyone's time, and gets you poorer help than you should get.

If you must send the same message to more than one newsgroup, please do so
by crossposting (but only to a *few* related newsgroups).

Hi everyone!

The problem was an ACL access.
I corrected it with C:\WINDOWS\system32\cacls.exe
since i have Windows XP Home SP2.

1) Do you know a better tool than cacls ?
This is pure pain.


2) One question still remain.
What do you suggest to prevent further OS disks
spreading for it's own management purpose ?

I can think about usage of disk quotas but this solution
will penalize one user from writing on the data disk.
