I have Windows Update set to automatic, and when you look at the update
history, it shows many failed updateds for Office XP. Office XP is not
installed on the computer. Why does it try to do those updates?

Do you have a version of MS Works with Word 2002 on it? If the answer is
yes, then that's why. Just go to MS Office Updates instead.

OK, I'm doing Microsoft Update, Windows and Office combined, but no, I do not
have Works on the machine, and my office version is 2003.

Then I don't know why you are getting failed updates for Office XP
components. I suggest you crosspost to the Windows Update and the MS
Office newsgroups, perhaps to here:

microsoft.public.windowsupdate
microsoft.public.officeupdate
