Post subject: Windows Installer running on boot & disk access
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>perform_maintain (more info?)

Background:
System is Windows XP SP2

I began receiving low disk space on drive C and started removing data &
programs.
I had recently bought a new copy of Easy Creator 9 to replace my existing
copy of Creator 7. Via add/remove programs I began removing Creator 7.
Midpoint during the uninstall I received an error message stating there was
not enuff space on the drive to remove the program. Thus the uninstall was
aborted. This apparently caused a catch 22 situation that caused my system
to freak out. The files that were removed up to that point were not replaced.
Now whenever I boot my system or try to access a hard drive Windows
installer begins running the Creator 7 installation routine. I downloaded
and installed Windows Installer Cleanup but when ran it shows nothing. In
other words, in the lower portion where you would expect to see the list of
installed programs it is entirely blank.
Any help in resolving this most aggrivating problem would be greatly
appreciated

What size hardrive do you have in your PC?

You could gain some more space by using Disk Cleanup.

Either that or down load CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) Run the "Cleaner"
option first, reboot and then run CCleaner again "Issues" option. Be sure
to click YES to back up registry entries being removed - by default these
will save to "My Documents"

Of course that was the first thing I did, then removing data files and
removing old and unused programs.
Anyway, I've determined that the problem is with windows installer itself.
Whenever I boot the pc or try to access a drive or drive files windows
installer begins running, attempting to install Creator 7. Prompting error
messages: unable to find certificate file & cannot open the certificate
reading dll. I've subsequently removed Creator 7 via Roxiozap and regedit.
But the problem remains thus leading me to suspect windows installer itself.
Trying windows remove programs for Creator 7/repair didn't work either.

Damn... sucks when that happens. I went through hell getting rid of a
botched up installation of IE7. There is a procedure for reinstalling
Windows Installer... but the knowledge base article number escapes me at the
moment.

CJ, there may be some misunderstanding here.
My problem is with Roxio's Easy Media Creator 7, not IE 7 as I think you
think.
No?

Yes, I understood that completely. At this point since you have nothing to
lose, I'd try this approach:

Google for - and download a Microsoft Utility file called MSICUU2.exe This
utility is an amazing tool, in that it removes corrupted Windows Installer
info files or entries for programs that fail to uninstall. Install the
software, and when you first open it. You'll see a populated list of
programs built up in there on the main screen that it can work with. Have a
look for Roxio Easy Creator 7 and if its there click on it.

Assuming its listed MSICUU2 should remove all the install/ uninstall
information for it, as well as its entry in Add/remove programs, and you
shouldn't have it popping up on you again.

On re-reading what you posted earlier... I see you already tried MSICUU2
(Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility.) I'm just as stumped as you are now.
This low drive space problem of yours really bugs me.. How large is the
hard drive you have? If its large enough, then Low disk space shouldn't be
a problem at all.
