Why do I keep getting the below message when I restart and what do I need to
do to fix it? Message: Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A
problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start service, restart
your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.

You are running a version of Windows Defender which has expired.

If you are on Windows 2000, uninstall Windows Defender, and find a suitable
replacement. If your Windows 2000 systems are clients in a large managed
network, please consider Microsoft Forefront Client Security--a free public
beta is available.

If you are a home user of Windows 2000, you'll need to find an alternative
antispyware. I like AVG's free antispyware product, myself.

If you are running Windows XP, just go to www.microsoft.com and download the
current released version of Windows Defender.

I also have this problem on XP2. I will try your solution, however, I am
running automatic update and found current downloads to Windows Defender when
I checked my update log. This leaves me wondering how I could be running an
expired version??

The program itself will not be updated via AutoUpdate or WindowsUpdate--just
the definitions and the engine.
