Post subject: Need Win XP Pro SP2 CD replacement - HELP
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)

My computer has XP Pro SP2, became infected with a virus which took over as
administrtor, blocked me doing most anything including windows installer
program and previous restore points. The virus was removed, but some damage
still remains.
The machine is begging for the CD which I don't have as the shop only did
H.D. install and loaded the keys & such. They are no longer in business.
The product ID is: 55274-640-254584-23555, build 2600 5.1
I also know the key.
Can Microsoft identify the ID so i can get an exact copy ... I'm afraid it's
some kind of 'builder's' version & I'm not liking the idea of buying some OEM
or retail software which may not work.
I was initially under the impression that any XP Pro SP2 CD would reload
essential files until reading this forum... now I'm not so sure.
Thanks in advance

Any Windows XP Professional (given you had professional) CD of the same
license type (or modified to accept keys of said license type) will work for
you.

In other words - you had an OEM license type. If you found an unmodified
generic Windows XP Professional OEM CD SP2/SP3 - the odds are *very good*
(nothing is 100%) your product key would allow you to reinstall your OS.

Heck - worst case - you could use someone's Retail CD/Retail Product key -
do the install and use a microaoft provided tool to change the key on your
system to your OEM licensed product key and then activate it.

The CD contents (exception: the setupp.ini file) is not as tied to the
product key as many people seem to believe.

Unfortunate your OEM went out of business.

It appears you are using a volume license. And volume licenses are not
transferable.

What is the history of this PC? What is the make and model? How did you
obtain it? Is it possible that it originally came with an OEM license of
XP Home before being upgraded to XP Pro with a volume license? One way
to determine this is by searching for a COA sticker on the PC case.

My guess is that the shop that sold you this PC loaded an illegal
version of Windows on it!

If you want to go legit, it looks like you *will* have to purchase a new
license/installation disk. And I'm sure it will work just fine.
