I have an HP Pavilion Media Center TV PC, model m7640n, AMD Athlon X2
w/ 2GB RAM. The machine came with MCE pre-installed (why a 32 bit
operating system on a 64 bit processor I don't know). The machine
performs very well as a desktop computer, with the exception of having
to restart every few days in order to free up the available RAM.
The problem I am having has been with the system from day 1. Live TV
will run, but after a while, the system looses all keyboard or mouse
control and I have to re-start the machine to clear it. In addition,
any attempt to access or refresh the guide results in the media center
crashing and terminating. Other features of media center seem to work,
although I have not used them very much. I don't know if the crashes
are due to a hardware or software problem and any help would be
appreciated.
When I first got the machine, I was more interested in using it to run
engineering programs, not as a media device. I am now retired and it
would be nice to be able to access the full features of the system. If
I cannot accomplish this, I may dump the operating system, re-format
the hard drive and install a 64 bit operating system.
TIA. >> Stay informed about: Win XP Media Center 2005 Crashes / Freezes |

You know since you are willing to chuck it all, you might consider upgrading
to vista premium. The media center experience is far richer in vista than
media center 2005. You'll love it more. Your machine is vista capable and
vista premium ready according to HP. You might want to run Microsoft's
upgrade advisor to be sure. I would suspect only your on-board video as
possibly not being up to snuff. But you do have an open PCI express slot so
plopping in a new video card would be simple enough. Or, see comments inline

behaviors

**Since day 1 is a long time. Does your remote control work when your mouse
and keyboard lose control? They're all Usb devices. Could be lock up due to
video drivers or MPEG codec, since it happens during live TV. Find
Micrsoft's video codec checker and run it.

Again, specific behaviors, error messages? Check the event viewer log for
concurrent events and notifications. Always check it right after an "act of
god." Don't wait since day 1. What is your network, ISP setup? Is this
happening with automatic updates or just manual update?
Just a suggestion for good service: After answering all the questions above
and performing all the tasks, start a new thread for each of the issues in
whatever priority you wish. You'll get more focused and managable help that
way.

Thanks for the input. I've already looked at that option.
According to HP, the machine is Vista capable. According to
Microsoft's Vista upgrade advisor, the video card is not recommended
for anything better than home basic, and that is marginal. HP did not
do a very good job of designing for Vista compatible or Vista ready.
The recommended video cards would run another $300.00 to $500.00. Not
sure the 'experience' is worth it.

I don't know what video cards you are looking at that are $300 to $500.
There are lots of Vista and Media Center Video Cards for much less money.
Many video cards can handle Vista and Media center, they are priced from
about $100.
Many are DirectX 10.
