Post subject: Vista MC crashes when setting up TV tuner Get Alert
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>mediacenter (more info?)

A while back I bought a cheap TV tuner and set it up with media centre.
Needless to say it didn't work very well so I returned it and invested in a
better one. Now whenever I do anything in MC I get the message "Application
Failure. A critical windows media process has failed. Please restart the
computer and try again. If the problem persists contact yor hardware
manufacturer for assistance."

Clicking ok makes this go away and MC continues as normal - except when you
click Set Up TV Signal. I am asked whether I want to continue, and if I click
yes windows infroms me that Media Centre has stopped working, crashes to the
desktop and restarts MC.

The new tuner works fine with the software it was bundled with, but I was
hoping to use MC to watch TV. Because I get the message anywhere in MC, I
suspect that it is MC that isn't working properly.

The other thing of note is that the blue ring loading symbol stays up all
the time whilst you are in the TV area of MC.

Can anyone help?

Not all tuners work with MC since not all tuners have the hardware and/or
drivers to support the MPEG2 encoded digital input which MC requires. What
make model tuner did you get

It's a geniatech EC8500T. The errors still occur when the card is unplugged,
if it was to blame would this happen? I had thought the old generic tuner had
done something to muck up MC.

Since you have a hybrid card MC will most likely only support the digital
tuner on the card.
You may need to start a new thread requesting support of a freeview capable
tuner card.

I would only use the digital tuner, but unfortunately MC crashes before you
get to that stage. I don't understand what you mean when you say "start a new
thread requesting support of a freeview capable tuner card", can you explain?
