Hi All, I have just bought a new laptop with Windows Xp media edition if I
upgrade to XP Pro, Media Edition is quite cool, but I like the features of
XP Pro, any problems might I expect, or will I lose all the Media Editon
features.

It's much more of a downgrade than an upgrade, and for that reason you can't
do it.

Media edition has everything ion XP Professional (minus the abiliy to join
a domain) plus all the extra Media additions. It you downgrade to XP
Professional, you will lose all those Media Center additions.

Media Center Edition is Windows XP Professional without the ability to join
a domain and with the Media Center additives.
There is no upgrade path from Media Center to Windows XP Professional.

Windows XP supported upgrade paths
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607

The part relevant is, "Windows XP Media Center Edition - Note Windows Setup
gives an error message that the Product Key is not valid (invalid) if you
attempt an upgrade or repair the installation with Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition or with Microsoft Windows XP Professional."

In other words - if you plan to slide over to Windows XP Professional
(adding the Join a Domain feature and losing the Media Center components
essentially) - then you can expect having to do a clean install of
everything.

Along the same thread: When I start the Media Center, it loads, but
locks up for a few seconds, then tells me that Messenger didn't start
and to make sure that Messenger is installed on my system.

I have an HP computer, so don't have a real XP disk, just the recovery
partition. Do I need to do an add components procedure?

I don't need Messenger for anything else, and even though the part of
Media Center I use seems to work OK (audio and radio), I'd like to get
it up and running a bit faster.

Any ideas would be appreciated...
