I don't understand why your NIC is disabled if you are connected to the
internet unless you are using dial-up or another connection method. Anyway,
go into Network Connections and look for your LAN connection. It should be
there unless it is disabled in the Bios. If you select it and
File|Properties you should be able to enable it if it is in fact disabled
already.
If you are referring to Windows XP sp2 firewall go to Control Panel and look
for the Windows Firewall applet and click on it. If it is enabled you can
disable it in the applet.
I was concerned that you said you could not install the Windows Updates
which may also be due to having an old version of the MS update module
itself installed. The way to update it is by going to MS update website and
manually updating it from there.
