This is the active mixer error message...
---------------------------
Volume Control
---------------------------
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to
Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add
Hardware.
This program will now close.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
Make sure that the Windows Audio service is set to Automatic and started.
Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Windows Audio |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services
When the Windows Audio service is not running you get the above error if you
try to open the Volume Control (sndvol32.exe).
Also when the Windows Audio service is not running if you open Sounds and
Audio Device Properties (mmsys.cpl) nearly everything will be grayed out
(unavailable) on every tab. On the Audio and Voice tabs you will also see
many No XXX Devices.
Also when the Windows Audio service is not running if you try to open a
sound file with windows Media Player you will get this error:
[[Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning
properly.]]
If you click on the More Information button, you get this:
[[0xC00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You may
encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
* Your sound device is in use by another program. Quit other programs that
may be using your sound device, and then try to play the file again.
* Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the
problem, see the Sound Troubleshooter in Windows Help or refer to your sound
device's documentation.
* You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound
device, and then try to play the file again.
Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000]]
If you open a video file with Windows Media Player and the Windows Audio
service is not running the video will play with no errors, you just don't
get any sound.

I have the same problem after my auto update. At first my sound was
intermittent then it finally went off. I see that a lot of operators have
similar problems. I think that the update carried the problem to all of us.
Has anyone found a solution?

I don't knowingly use "Windows Live", just the normal WinXP auto-
updates, so I don't know whether my solution applies to you all.
Not sure when it first went bad, because I seldom use sound on the
machine in question, probably 1 or 2 weeks ago.
Mine is a RealTek ALC650, on a Albatron KX18D Pro II motherboard.
I reinstalled latest RealTek AC97 driver, A4.00, no change.
I checked in "services", and saw that Windows Audio was already
"started"/"automatic".
What finally worked for me is, to uninstall the "Microsoft WINMM WDM
Audio Compatibility Driver".
It was the only item in my Device Manager that has a yellow
exclamation status. >> Stay informed about: No Sound mixer device. |
