Post subject: Problems after degfragging and cleaning up windows XP disk. Get Alert
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>perform_maintain (more info?)

One night I was cleaning up my windows XP
and I did the following:
- Defragging
- Disc Clean Up.

After I rebooted the system, it took much longer to completely load windows,
but not too much.
After it was done loading, I could not use copy and paste, my sound
dissapeared and my taskbar is completely messed up, the way I had set up my
taskbar dissapeared.
Even after I enabled quicklaunch, it wasn't as it used to be.

I even tried to copy several files and wanted to paste them in another
location on another harddrive, but when doing so in the new location (hitting
right mouse button) copy and paste options were not highlighted as it
should've been.

I've tried chkdsk (/p and /r), but to no avail Sad

please help.

I cannot lose some files on my C disk since I cannot copy them to another
location

Thanks in advance!

Dave

I have a similar but different situation...

I ran defrag on a users laptop with XP Pro, then ran the Error-Checking
feature.

When the system restarts the HDD light is flashing, but the screen seems to
hang at ...Windows\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys (this is in safe mode after
waiting what seemed to be way too long for the thing to boot normally). I am
continuing to wait, but this is crazy.

Any idea's?

Thanks.

After a couple of hours it finally came all the way up. We'll see what
happens from this point on.

Thanks! I'll correct my process. Sometimes you start doing something for no
real reason, and it just sticks. I've always done it in that order.
