I am just venting my frustration! This update has caused me a lot of grief.
Number of my start-up processes are closed upon restart after the update and
cannot be automatically started (inluding MS's own Genuine Advanatage
notification). The machine freezes and needs to be hard rebooted. There is
no option to unistall the updates. I am tuning the automatic updates off on
both my computers. I just spend the whole day getting the desktop computer
working again.

I probably installed the same updates as you and experienced no trouble
whatsoever. Here are some of the things I have learned over the years:

1- Temporarily disable anti-malware software before installing updates.
2- Close all open applications before installing updates.
3- Do not install updates if your computer is not working properly.
4- Backup before installing updates.

There are probably other tips I'm forgetting, as I have internalized so
much. By adopting these habits I have never had a problem with Windows
Update, and that includes big updates like Service Packs.

Whole day?! If it was the update that messed things up, all you needed
to do was uninstall the update (followed perhaps by a System Restore to
December 7). Also, Leonard gave you advice worth following. And if you
want to have a safety net, please start imaging your hard drive.
Restoring an image shouldn't take longer than fifteen minutes.
