Playing .MP4 video files?

Can video files with .mp4 extensions be played within MCE? If so, what
codec needs to be installed?

mp4 is a generic file extension like avi, you'll need to load whatever codec
the file needs. I've had pretty good luck with ffdshow. You'll also need
to add the perceived file type registry entry for mp4, copy the below to a
..reg file and merge it.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4]
"PerceivedType"="video"
