A friend of mine has gotten infected with the "Personal Security"
virus, that is, no matter what icons or programs you try to start it
will not allow you to run any programs.
I got this thing about a month ago, and was able to restore my
computer with my weekly backup, but my friend running XP cannot
get the restore to work. I think he had a few people look at it
but don't think any are gurus or such.
Is there anything he can do to try to salvage his computer?
Thanks,

Several of the anti-virus vendors have bootable recovery CDs that you
can point at the afflicted PC. Can't say for sure if they'll fix this
problem, but it's probably worth a try.
Avira's bootable image is available here:
http://dlpro.antivir.com/package/rescue_system/common/en/rescue_system...mmon-en
I'm sure there are others.
Download it, burn to a CD, then set the afflicted PCs BIOS to boot from
the CD and cross your fingers.

Have you tried googling for the solution? You probably need a real guru.

Thank you, it worked.
By his going into the task manager and disabling the Personal Security
..exe file, he was able to go to RESTORE and restore the machine to
a few weeks prior.
Thanks for the help,
Jim

System Restore is not the way to remove an infection, even though it may
appear to be working. Also, by restoring "to a few weeks prior" the
computer may now have an unstable combination of old and new system files.

Jim,
Glad to hear that you could gain control of the system BUT, the Personal
Security uninstall guide does *NOT* suggest using System Restore in
place of cleaning the compromised system. *Strongly suggest* that you
follow the recommended steps to ensure that the malware has been removed.
Also, see if the system is missing any updates now that a restore point
has been used. If Windows or Automatic Update does not function
then that's an indication that the system is *still* infected.

Have a look here, Jim. Good luck. I got it this morning (the bug, I
mean) and format-ed my C: drive/partition.
My usual move when it is taking too much time searching for removals.
Now I found this. >> Stay informed about: Personal Security virus - is there any cure? |

Restoring the system can clear your problem by some what and you can
have the best performance than before. Personal Security virus is a
unwanted and very harmful application that may itself to computers by
simply visiting a malicious websites. Personal Security will
compromised computer and user’s confidential data. Just like the old
variants Cyber Security, it propagates on computers quickly by means of
Internet and Trojan commonly found on infected websites. The most
successful method that rogue developers apply to easily contaminate a
computer is via browser hijacker that will redirect user to a website
that will run a fake online virus scanner. These websites will alarm
users of a possible infections and prompts to download and install
Personal Security. They claim that Personal Security will be able to
remove all threats detected. Unknown to the innocent user, this was
just a trick to further infect the system and later on it will lead to
a fraudulent online transactions to buy the registered version of
Personal Security.
