Post subject: PCI-E Video card shows as "Unknown" device type in Device Manager?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

Hi all -

I've been running and supporting XP for some time now and haven't ever run
into this particular issue: I noticed when cleaning up my girlfriend's
machine tonight that her ATI X1600XL video card is showing up in Device
Manager under an "Unknown" device type instead of "Display Adapters". I've
re-installed the latest Catalyst drivers, as well as the proper chipset
drivers for her system (NVidia NForce4) but no luck so far. Any ideas on how
to try and correct this issue??

for the unknown device...opt to update drivers...
then install the latest XP drivers for that card

Is it working properly? Is the rest of the system stable?

If yes, leave things alone. Trying to "correct" situations
like this only leads to breaking other stuff on the box...

I guess you missed the part where I said "I've re-installed the latest
Catalyst drivers, as well as the proper chipset drivers for her system
(NVidia NForce4) but no luck so far. ", right?

As far as I can tell, yes, the card's working properly and the system is
stable.

Thanks for the info, this was actually a useful response!

No I did not miss that...
but sometimes running the installer will miss things.

If you can extract the drivers...
then update the unassigned hardware you might get it to work.
Once in a while it's required to allow hidden files to be shown in Windows
Explorer.
I've seen a few drivers have hidden files
