XP SR2

Have (what is to me) an unusual problem in opening folder.
In Explorer, if I expand My Computer, I get a list of drives under My
Computer. Highlighting any of these drives gives me a list of folders
in the right pane.
If I highlight any folder on the right and hit ENTER, I get what appears
to be a cmd prompt screen for 1-2 seconds which then disappears - but
the folder does not open.
If I double-click any folder on the right, I get what appears to be a
cmd prompt screen for 1-2 seconds which then disappears - but the folder
does not open.
BUT, If I right-click any folder on the right and select OPEN, the
folder opens as it should.
Any file I right-click in the right pane opens as it should. Only
problem is the folders.
How do I resolve this?

Opening folders in different views - I'm aware that using option for folders I can change the way a group of folders opens. Is it possible to have say one folder like MY pictures say in folder view & have say My Music open in detail view? -- Thanks in advance

Slow opening folders - The severity of this problem varies, but at its worst it's glacially slow. For example, I might be viewing the My Computer folder D:\Docs\SUNDRY\XYZ\ABC\Example and then click to go up one place in the tree. But it sometimes takes 10-30 seconds to appear...

Slow opening of folders (again) - I know this is a regular question and that there could be many contributions to slow performance. But I've done all the 'obvious' things like regular clean-ups, daily defragging, chkdsk /f, sfc /scannow, and yet sometimes on clicking the 'Up' tool icon....

OPENING FILE FOLDERS - File folders open with DOS, how do i change this? -- THANKS, KAYLA

Opening Folders / Context Menu - When double clicking to open a folder, it opens the search menu instead. How can we change this? When you right click, the context menu shows the search option in bold instead of open.
