If Nero is a 'plugin', what does it plug-into?

I think you are talking about the plug-in that NERO adds to Windows Media Player.
It is NOT a plugin. It uses lots of plugins and it is a full suit of applications.

Nero itself is not a plug-in, it's a CD mastering program.

Dave, I'm also inquisitive about NERO. It came with my R/W drive and said
it was necessary to dowload it! Nevertheless, I found that I did not have to
activate it to R/W. However ever time I try to find out how it functions it
keeps wanting to be the master of control for all data, music, etc.

my experience is somewhat limited. Next (dumb) question then is how can I
find out if my download of NERO actually does anything? As I stated before if
I try to activate an .exe file in Nero nothing seems to happen?
