I have set-up a LAN for home use consisting of a desktop and laptop pc. I
have a capped 1GB monthly wireless internet download plan. I currently have
"allow automatic Microsoft updates" selected on the desktop pc.

I would like to know whether I would be able to transfer and install these
Windows XP updates over the LAN from desktop to laptop in order to reduce
doubling up on my monthly internet download limit in order to keep both pc's
up to date.

If this is possible, appreciate any assistance offered.

You need to download the updates (not through Windows Update) and save
them. Then you can redistribute them.

How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog or
from the Microsoft Update Catalog:

Store Windows Updates locally for subsequent installations -
