In updating, it indicated that I needed to download <Microfoft.NET Framework
1.1>,
which I did. Now, I don't know what it is, what it is used for and do I need
it on my computer?

It's used to support programs written using .net 1.1. Without it, such
programs won't run.

Do you need it? That depends on whether you run any such programs. But even
if you don't run any such programs today, you might tomorrow. If I were in
your shoes I would just keep it and not worry about whether you need it.

The .Net frameworks are utilities that help computer software
publishers. Since if you have the .Net frameworks, these publishers do
not have to "compile" their utilities with all possible code libraries
included. This makes the utilities a smaller size.

BTW: I know that Ahead's Nero & Ultimate edition now definately
requires .Net Freamework 2.0.
