I bought a brand new headset and tried to use it. I plugged the mic
and the speaker plugs into the jacks. The headphones work fine, i can
hear everything. But the microphone will not pick up any sound at all.
I went to the sound options and enabled it for playback and recording,
made sure it wasnt muted and all that. I went to test it on sound
recorder and it wont pick up anything. And yes, it is plugged in the
right spot. Any help? >> Stay informed about: Microphone on headset does not work |

I set the microphone to the primary sound/voice recording device and it
still isn't picking anything up.

Display -all- volume/record properties for the device and ensure none of
them are preventing you.
Go to the Multimedia Setup & under Audio ensure that the Microphone for
your device is set up as the primary recording device.
Give that a shot and see how you go.

I just had same problem 30 minutes ago, the guy at shop went to control
panel, sound/audio devices, sound, sound recording device, volume, click
select for mic and then advanced and removed tick from AGC and the 20dbBoost
and it fixed it. Try it but you may have all ready

I'm having a different problem with recognition of a USB headset. As did
the Original Poster, I went to the sound options and enabled it for playback
and recording, but for me that worked. The problem is that every time I
plug in the USB headset I need to go to sound options and do the same thing.
This makes use of a microphone for Skype calls quite awkward since I don't
keep the headset connected at all times and after connecting the headset no
one can hear me for the first 30 seconds and I need to fumble around with
audio settings before the caller hangs up.
I have this problem on my portable Windows XP Professional computer, but on
my desktop Windows XP Home computer the headset is automatically set to
default for playback and recording as soon as I plug it in. On the
portable, using the same Logitech headset, I hear a recognition tone and the
headset appears in the choices, but it is not set to default.
Is there some way to configure things so the USB headset gets set
automatically to default playback and recording as it does on the desktop
computer?

I have had a similar problem. I have gone through three headsets on the Dell
I bought in October. Neither the microphone nor the earphones worked. This
last set converts to a USB connection, but it doesn't work on either the
regular jacks or the USB jacks.
I messed around tonight, downloading Dell updates, switching plugs around,
until I got both the mic and the sound to register on the control panel. Mind
you, I could hear nothing. I tried the recorder. It, too, registered sound
coming in through the mike. But I could hear nothing on record or playback.
I figure I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Any help
out there? (By the way, Dell's lousy 90-day warranty and their unhelpful Help
desk have made me a convert. For my next computer purchase, whatever I get,
it's not going to be a Dell. I also tried using their forum but gave up when
I could find no way of posting this message.) >> Stay informed about: Microphone on headset does not work |

Are you getting sound through speakers? I would start by making sure its a
windows problem and not a connection problem.

right click on the speaker icon in the systray, open volume controls
then take a look at the microphone settings...
The microphone is normally "muted" so that it will not generate a
feedback loop from the mic to speakers to mic etc but, with the headset
plugged in unmute it, then scratch the mike as you adjust the volume to
see if you can hear the scratches in the headset.
Some audio setups have an advanced option on the column which may offer
boost settings.
