XP sp2
2.0 GHz Pentium
2.0 GB Ram

Whilst I'm burning an AVI movie to DVD using Nero 7 I can hardly use
any other apps, or everything else I may be working on is painfuly
slow. Is there a way to allocate more processing power/memory to help
solve this issue. I remember there's an option to increase cache of
buffer size somewhere, would this help this problem?

Burning CD/DVDs is probably taking a lot of your system resources. I
have a system similar to yours (AMD 3000+, 2 gigs RAM) and don't do
anything else while burning. Also, Nero is probably a memory hog. I
uninstalled Nero and now use a free program called FinalBurner.

In addition you could try:

Open Control panel\System\Advanced, click on Settings, Advanced and
check if Processor Scheduling and Memory usage are both set to
programs.

Click Virtual memory\Change and check your virtual memory (swap file).
Since you have 2 gigs of ram you can set it to 4092. Also check Visual
effects. The more that are checked the more of your computer's
resources are being used for eye candy - try turning off some or check
Adjust for Best Performance.

Right-click on an empty space on the taskbar, click on Task manager
\Applications to see what else is running. Almost check processes and
see what can be turned off. There's a free program called EndItAll2
that's even better than the task manager that I use and recommend.
