(Apologies if this is a duplicate post.)

Okay. I know about the link to downlaod the .iso file to burn an XP SP3
disk:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb...88-8c50

which has the following file:

xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso

I know about this page, where once can download the standalone
*installer* for SP2:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E...30-8245

which has the following file:

WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

Question:

Doesn't there exist a Microsoft page where one can download the .iso
file for SP2?

TIA.

Trusted and legitimate?
AFAIK, No.

It's not like the ISO is all that special as opposed to the full
installation (IT version) anyway. Just a matter of setup. Wink

I had a feeling that's all that's available. No biggie, of course.

Hey, while I have you on the line, Shenan, I have a question about
upgrading to SP3. I'm helping out a friend with a laptop. Her Vaio comes
with XP SP1 (not SP1a). In order to upgrade to SP3, my understanding is
that SP3 cannot be applied directly to SP1 (or to XP gold, for that
matter). So just to be safe, I applied SP2 and now I am applying SP3.

Since SP1a is *so* similar to SP1, is there a workaround?

I can't recall exactly what files added to XP Gold by SP1 are necessary
for the upgrade to SP3, but AFAIK, the *only* difference between SP1 and
SP1a is that the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine was *removed* in SP1a as
the result of litigation between MS and Sun. Thus, Either SP1 or SP1a
should be OK as a basis from which to upgrade to SP3.

Note, however, that: "If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer
running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media
Center Edition may malfunction." [XP SP3 Release Notes

That's what I used to think. And that's what I used to advise. However,
this updated Microsoft page states:

"To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), either Windows XP Service
Pack 1a (SP1a) or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) must already be
installed."

(from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 )

I wonder if it is *only* MCE or has something else been discovered
recently...

At this point I'm only guessing because I don't want to spend them time
researching, but my guess is that the article you cite refers to SP1a
because there's a section about installing SP1a. MS can't advise people
to install SP1 because of the settlement with Sun, so if the article
first stated

To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), either Windows XP Service
Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) must already be installed.

it would then have to say something like,

If you have to install SP1, go instead to the section of this article
that describes installing SP1a.

That would be *really* confusing.

But it's only a guess.

Differences Between Windows XP SP1 and Windows XP SP1a
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813926

On September 9, 2002, Microsoft released Windows XP SP1. On February 3,
2003, Microsoft released SP1 again as SP1a. ... Windows XP SP1a is the
same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is
removed in SP1a. ... When you install Windows XP SP1a, the following
changes are made to the registry. These changes indicate that SP1a is
installed ... The title for the Windows XP Service Pack 1 entry in the
Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel is changed to "Windows XP
Service Pack 1a." ... There are no other changes or fixes included in
this update.

Of course, that doesn't explain the issue with MCE (SP1) ...

Almost a noble attempt, Andrew E....

It's always good to repeat the information the OP gave as a "known" when
asking about an unknown as the answer to their unknown. Wink
