Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB928366)

The message I get when my computer is trying to download the update listed
above is:
Some updates could not be installed
The following updates were not installed.
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB928366)
The icon at the bottom of my screen warning me that updates are ready to be
installed, does not go away after this update fails to be installed. What do
I do now?
Thanks, Donna

Donna, from reading a post in another NG with the same problem, you should
install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility from the MS website. Remove
the entry for the problem update if it is already present and try installing
again. It seems that you have downloaded the update but the installation is
being blocked by Windows Installer. Many problems with installing
applications can sometimes be solved with the Installer Cleanup program.

Well, the icon went away when I did as you suggested. I hope that means all
is well. Thank you for your reply!

Check in "Add and Remove Programs" with "show updates" checked that the
update is installed. If you have this problem again post back; some people
have had to reinstall Dotnet framework 1.1 and Windows Installer 3.1 in
order to fix this issue. If everything is fine I am glad to hear it. Here is
the link anyway for reinstalling Windows Installer :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891 (just in case).

The icon is back, the download won't work and the update is not showing up in
my Add/Remove programs. The Windows Cleanup Installer is on my computer
under Programs, but what am I supposed to do with it?

Sorry Donna,
According to the post in another group , here are the full instructions to
correct this problem:

First, check that your version of Windows Installer is 3.1.4000.4039 by
typing at the Start menu Run "%systemroot%\system32" and then select the
file "msi.dll" . Under File|"properties" for this file you can see the
version number. In case it is not 3.1.4000.4039, then first install security
update KB927891 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891 . (That is the link
I gave in a previous post quoted above but I incorrectly said it was to
reinstall Windows Installer.)
Now you need not the Windows Installer Cleanup that I already told you to
download but a special deinstallation tool :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyI...a4efc33 .
Download and run the uninstall cleanup program.
Next, reinstall DotNet Framework 1.1 sp1 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=es&FamilyI...81fb2cd .
Restart Windows XP.
Download the update KB928366 which you are trying to install :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=es&FamilyI...81fb2cd .
(I know you already downloaded the update but you probably need to repeat it
after doing the above) .

Allan,
It is version 3.14000.4039. The instructions you sent only said what to do
if it's not. So now what?

Hi Donna,
You apparently don't have to update Windows Installer with KB927891, but you
do need to do the rest. I assume that you do not have DotNet framework 2.0
installed, only DotNet 1.1, am I correct? The reason I am asking is that
after you install the update I am not sure if it does show up in Add/Remove
programs with "show updates" checked. (On my system it shows that I have
KB928365 installed but I have DotNet framework 2.0 installed.)

I don't know what DotNet Framework I have. No clue what that is or how to
find out what I do have. Obviously, clueless in NC.
Thanks for you patience!

Go to Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs...
Check the "Show Updates" box at the top...

When the list refreshes, scroll down to the (it's in alphabetical order) to
"Microsoft" and find the entries for "Microsoft .NET Framework X.X" and come
back and let us know each version and subsequent update (as a sub category
under the entry) you have.

Using the same method to see them (Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs)
remove the hotfix and then remove the .NET Framework 1.1 and reboot.

Download/install/use the following:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=7A4EFC33-0343...E4-B0C4

Followed by:

- Download/Install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886903/
- Download/Install http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928366/

Reboot as needed.

<my2cents> The cause of the .NET Framework updates failing to install is
due to interference from antivirus software. The AV may also have
damaged the initial installation of the .NET Framework in such a manner
that it can never install subsequent updates for it although it performs
correctly.

Since Donna's system is experiencing this it would behoove her to
*completely disable* the installed AV after the downloads complete and
then disconnect the system from the net, if on broadband, until the
installations complete.
Then *reenable* said AV and reconnect. </my2cents>

Very good recommendation, MowGreen, not only for this problem but for all
the WU downloads. I always turn off my AV (AVG Free) while installing
Windows Updates. I only turn it back on after rebooting following
installation.

Thank you, Allan. MS also recommends virus scanning options that should
mitigate issues of damage/corruption of logs essential to the updating
process. I *highly* second these recommendations :

Virus scanning recommendations for computers that are running Windows
Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
