Is there a set of permissions that can be applied to a file or folder
that would allow a user to open the file in Notepad or some other
program if they know the full path and name of the file but would not
allow that user to see the file in Windows Explorer?

The files exist in a folder on an XP Pro machine and are accessed via
from another PC via a mapped drive.

Right-click on the folder, Properties, Security, Advanced button. Use
File -> Help and Support to search on "permissions", then click on the
entry simply labelled "Permissions", click on "File and Folder
Permissions" to see what they mean.

There is no entry labeled simply "Permissions" in my XP Pro SP2.

Try searching on "folder permissions". For me, it's the 9th entry
down in the first search group "Suggested Topics".

Or, in an address bar, enter:

ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\aclui.chm::/sag_seconceptsunobject.htm

but navigation doesn't work outside of the help program, so then
enter:

ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\aclui.chm::/acl_special_permissions.htm

Thanks for your help. That might be a very usefull matrix if it were
accompanied by some explanatory text. I am guessing that what it tells
me is that any permissions that allow the user to read or execute a
file also allow the user to list the contents of the folder in Windows
Explorer which means that the user can easily copy the files.

Interesting. "Permissions and user rights" is the 9th item on my system
and the only thing it talks about is the rights you need to run backups.

If you cannot understand the description of the folder/file
permissions then you really should not be administering anyone else's
host. Or, if it your host that is sharing files and you don't want
others to use those files, and because you cannot figure out the
permissions, just turn off file and printer sharing on your host.
Have the other users use sneakernet to get your files or you can
upload them to an FTP server or to online web page space.
