Post subject: Generic Host Process Error
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

Up until August I had my machine set up to run auto updates. I started
getting "Generic Host Processing errors after an update failed to complete.
The Update log listed it failed on installing the Security update KB922616.
After that point, I would get a Generic Host Process error whenever the PC
would start up. I killed (disabled) "Auto Updates", so I could continue
using my machine, but would like to get the problem resolved. I found
knowledge base item KB894391 addresses an issue that might cause a generic
host process error, but the install didn't take care of the problem.
Has anyone experienced this issue, and knows of a solution?
Is there a better place to be posing this question?
Is there a place to pickup the updates manually - e.g., without "Auto
Updates" being involved?

Any help would be appreciated.

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Warning and Error Reports and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

I hadn't seen anything revelaing when I looked at the event log in August,
but looked at it again tonight. Still nothing conclusive, but decided to
dsiable Norton's LiveUpdate task which was logged just prior to the event log
entry corresponding to the error. After restarting the PC, the Window's
update was retrieved and installed sucessfully. I then restarted the PC, and
re-enabled Norton's LiveUpdate service, and restarted the PC. All is working
correctly now in this area. Don't know the exact nature of the problem.
Looks like clearing up the problem, which was created by the failed update
back in August, wouldn't allow both the LiveUpdate and the Windows Update to
be scheduled at startup.
There is a warning I see in the event log (below) - is there a way to
determine what service had the registry tied up when the OS was trying to
save the user registry?
Thanks for suggesting going to the event log.

Michael

************* Warning event log entry ******************
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 12/24/2006
Time: 5:28:47 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: MICHAEL3G
Description:
Windows saved user MICHAEL3G\Owner registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

<snip>

Run the User Profile Hive Clean Up Service to remove that error. There is a
link to download it in the article. It runs as a service.

Michael

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://snipurl.com/5b61

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates I have Automatic not
checked and have checked "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install". When notified I always commence the process by selecting
Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows
Update and opt for a Custom install.
