Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>games (more info?)

I put this post under XP Media and then realized it should be under Games.

We have MS Flight Simulator 2004 which we never installed on old computer.
Now we have new E1505 with Win XP Media Center Edition and 2 g memory.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 10 Deluxe is loaded and running well with a joy
stock that came as a bundle with new computer.

I can't find on software box if 2004 will run on XP Media Ctr but on the
internet list of MS games it shows that Flight Simulator 2004 does run on XP.
Will we have a problem loading this 2 yr old program never used. It has
different airplanes and my husband would love to play it but we are not
computer savvy on games and media and I don't want to mess up what the Dell
tech already has set up with new simulator. Help??

It will run just fine, but won't look near as good as FSX Smile

I wish I could load it ! I recently bought it (scared off FSX by need for
mega powerful computer). My problem is that when i try to install it my cd
drive doesnt seem to recognise the installation CDRom(s). It wont install
automatically and when I use 'Add new programs' in the Control Panel I get an
error mesage saying "windows was unable to find the installation program".
This happens with the first CD and is as far as I get which is very
frustrating.
Is this a problem with a faulty CD or with the computer settings ? If its
the settings what is likely to be the problem ?

Hi Tom,

That type of error could mean the CD is corrupt... Check the CD
and the CD Player. Clean both using a Cleaning Kit, and check for
scratches on the CD. Try installing the game on another computer,
if the game installs, the culprit is probably your CD ROM drive if it
doesn't install then it's the CD, in which case you need to replace it.

Before replacing the CD, try copying it to your hard drive and then
run the setup / installation program from there. To copy the CD go
to My Computer, Right-Click the CD, Choose "Copy", then Right-
Click on your Hard Drive, Choose "Paste".

Uninstall the game using Add-Remove programs before attempting
to reinstall it. (Start / Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs).

Here are three basic troubleshooting steps which I recommend:

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de and/or
Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com) to remove any Spyware/Adware.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

If nothing including those 3 steps have resolved the problem so far,
here's more basic troubleshooting steps and information including:
The Safedisc patch
How to check CD for imperfections, and
How to Disable Virtual CD rom drives which is described at:
