File permissions

I have been getting the "Access Denied" message repeatley for my home user
and am unable to take ownership in in the safe mode administrator account. I
am unsure whether this has occured during a repair or whther it was a
malicious attack. Sadly I don't think I am capable of such wonders myself.
Any suggestions. Has anyone run commands from the repair console that have
fixed these kind of problems in the past?

What are these files? Where are they located?

You say, "unable to take ownership in in the safe mode", so can we safely
assume you are trying this:

Read carefully - Windows XP Home is different than Windows XP Professional
and supersets.

Also - I would recommend (highly) doing the following:

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot.
