External storage

I have purchased an external USB hard drive but cannot see it in "my
computer" when I plug it in to the USB port. The start bar does however see
it and load the "remove hardware safetly" icon. Since trying to load this
hard drive I also not have the same problem with my USB key which I also
used to be able to see in "my computer". Does anyone know why I cannot see
these storage media to transer files to anymore?
