I'd like to reduce the huge number of fonts, as I only use a few of them.
I've tried deleting blocks of them from Windows/fonts, and get a message that
the file cannot be found. I also tried from control panel/fonts, got same
message. Then followed the instructions to click start/run and type in
%windir%\fonts, but again the delete wasn't accepted.

Where are the fonts stored? Any ideas?

Thanks

Windows/Fonts.

Make sure you know what you are doing before you start deleting fonts.

I have 1,845 fonts on my system and have used all of them at one time or
another.

Thanks D.Spencer Hines, for responding to my query. But I was looking for
something a bit more specific. You are pointing out the risks of deleting
fonts, and my query showed that I'm already aware of the risks, which is why
I'm asking for help in reducing my list of fonts to those I use. I don't
know what work you do on your computer, but I certainly haven't used any more
than a dozen or so, and I don't anticipate expanding this work in the future.
In any case, I can always download new fonts in the unlikely event that the
ones I keep aren't suitable.

I just need to know which fonts are crucial to Windows (in addition to
Tahoma), and then I can keep the list of the ones I need and get rid of the
rest.

Thanks anyway, I hope someone else can help

Actually, even if you delete all the fonts it will not hurt anything but i
tried this and all the fonts on windows etc changed to unknown boxes so i was
like blind... but i managed to put the fonts back in Windows\Fonts and
everything was OK.

My Point Precisely...

All sorts of fonts are useful in various situations -- such as reading and
printing documents in various languages.

I seem to remember that in Windows 9X, the more fonts installed, the
longer it took for Windows to start because all the fonts had to be
loaded. I think that was what it was.

Memories fade... :>))

As I noted previously, the fonts are stored in Windows > Fonts.

Each font can be viewed there and kept or deleted as desired.

But, care, intelligence and skill are preferred to foolish daring and
deletions.
